Quill & Coin
Privacy Policy
Effective October 24, 2026
This policy explains what information themissingcipher.com collects, why, and what you can do about it. The site is run by QUILL&COIN LLC ("Quill & Coin," "we," or "us"), a New Jersey company owned by Michelle Brenner, author of The Missing Cipher.
The short version: we collect only what we need to run your account, your purchases, and the newsletter you asked for. We don't sell your information, and we don't use advertising trackers.
What we collect
When you create an account
Your name, email address, and password. If you sign in with Google or GitHub, we receive your name and email address from that service instead of a password. We also note whether you've entered a reader code, so you don't have to enter it again.
When you use the dashboard and worksheets
The chapters and worksheets you check off and the answers you type into worksheets. Without an account, these stay in your browser. With an account, we also save them so they're available on any device you log in from.
When you buy coaching
Payments are handled by Stripe. We receive your name, email address, what you bought, and the amount paid. We never see or store your full card number.
When you send a coaching request
What you enter in the form: your name, email address, and what you'd like help with.
When you join the newsletter or get the free worksheet
Your email address, your first name if you give it, and where you signed up. We add these to our email list so we can send the newsletter.
When you click a link to a bookstore
We count how many times each link is clicked each day so we know which links are useful. These counts don't include cookies, IP addresses, or anything else that identifies you.
Automatically
Like any website, our hosting provider receives technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request, and keeps it in short-lived server logs for security and troubleshooting.
How we use it
- To run your account, unlock reader resources, and save your progress and answers.
- To process purchases, schedule coaching, and reply to your requests.
- To send the newsletter, only if you signed up for it. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also turn the newsletter off in your account settings.
- To keep the site secure and working, and to understand which pages and links are useful.
We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't share it for other companies' advertising.
Cookies and browser storage
We use a few small cookies and browser storage entries that the site needs to work:
- Reader access: remembers that you entered a valid reader code, for up to a year.
- Login session: keeps you logged in, for up to 30 days.
- Browser storage: keeps your login, reading progress, and worksheet answers in your browser.
We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. When you click through to a bookstore, that store (for example, Amazon, Bookshop.org, or Barnes and Noble through Impact) may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy, including to credit us for referrals.
Services we use
These companies process information on our behalf so the site can work:
- Netlify: hosts the site and stores accounts, progress, worksheet answers, form submissions, and signups.
- Stripe: processes payments.
- Zoho: manages our contact list and newsletter.
- Google and GitHub: only if you choose to sign in with them.
- Google Fonts and unpkg: deliver the fonts and some of the code the pages use, so your browser connects to them when pages load.
Affiliate links
Some links to books and stores are affiliate links. If you buy something after clicking one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter anytime with the link in any email or in your account settings.
- Access, correct, or delete your information by contacting us. We'll delete your account, progress, and worksheet answers, and remove you from our list. We keep purchase records as long as the law requires for tax and accounting.
- Clear your browser storage to remove anything saved only in your browser.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law, such as the right to know what we hold about you. Contact us and we'll honor them.
How long we keep it
We keep account information, progress, and answers while your account is open, and newsletter information until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Coaching request messages are kept for as long as they're useful for working with you. Purchase records are kept as required by law.
Security
The site uses HTTPS everywhere, passwords are never stored in plain text, and payment details go directly to Stripe. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
Children
The site is meant for working professionals and isn't directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll let account holders and newsletter subscribers know by email.
